“3CLpro”, A Critically Important Enzyme In The Struggle Against Covid-19 Has Been Produced
Following a three-month intensive study in Bartın University labs, “3CLpro”, a critically important enzyme for preventive and curative drug tests to be used in Covid-19 treatment, is domestically produced.
In the scope of the struggle against Covid-19 pandemic, a significant step has been taken by our university with the Project granted by Ministry of Industry and Technology, Western Black Sea Development Agency (BAKKA). The “3CLpro” enzyme, which was produced after a three-month non-stop work carried out within the scope of BAKKA’s “Struggle and Resilience Program With COVID-19” in our university labs, is produced with recombinant DNA technology.
Associate Professor Dursun Kısa, the Department Head of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, informed about their studies and said: “3CLpro enzyme, which is used in the inhibition trials, is essential in the struggle against the pandemic.”
Kısa said that that the domestically produced main proteaz enzyme will fasten the production of preventive medicines and the treatment process and added: “since the enzyme is domestically produced, the drug trials will quickly be done in-vitro and it will be used for the scanning of the effectiveness of molecules which could be potential drugs.”
Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Uzun once again indicated the importance of scientific struggle against Coronovirus, a global problem, and said that our institution was working to support this struggle with all its stakeholders.
